Relative major and minor scales share the same key signature but start on different notes. It often also begins on that chord, returns to that chord often, and features a. SCALE RELATIONSHIPS: Major and minor scales may be relative or parallel. It is also called the tonic, and its the 'do' in 'do-re-mi'.For example, music in the key of A major almost always ends on an A major chord, the chord built on the note A. This note is the tonal center of that key, the note where music in that key feels 'at rest'. It contains elements from both the ascending form of the melodic minor (the G ♯) and the descending form (the F). A scale starts with the note that names the key. The third and final form of the A minor scale is the harmonic minor (which has the same intervallic structure both ascending and descending).
In Example 51, the bracketed naturals remind us that, whereas in the ascending scale the F and G become F ♯ and G ♯ respectively, in the descending form the G and F remain as G and F.

We’ll consider the guidelines for how to deal with this in Section 6 on accidentals and we’ll also discuss the role of another accidental, the natural, shown by the symbol ♮. Instead, when F ♯s or G ♯s are required in the music, the sharps have to be written in for each note, or at least as often as is necessary. Going up, the 3rd scale degree is flat, but the rest is like a major scale, and going down it is the same as a natural minor scale. This step shows the number of sharps or flats in this melodic minor scale so that the number of symbols needed for the key signature can be identified.
